When you have kids in the house, you can’t help but worry about what they are up to and how safe they are, especially when you are not watching over them. Kids care more about fun than safety, thus you cannot take any chances on their safety. If anything, it is you who will take care of damages and injuries when they mess up.
One of the things to pay attention to is the sofas. Kids enjoy jumping on couches while in the living room and they do not know how to maintain them clean. They will spill drinks on them, drop food items and sit on them with dirty clothes, and step on them with dirty feet or shoes. It doesn’t matter how many times you tell them it is wrong, they’ll do it anyway. What you can do to make them enjoy and reduce your stress levels at the same time is to invest in good quality leather couches that are easy to clean and sturdy. Or, choose slip covered couches that have fabric which is stain resistant for easy cleaning.
Next, take extra caution with your coffee tables and cupboards. Avoid buying sharp edged furniture for your home, especially when you have kids who are learning how to walk. Sharp edged furniture is hazardous, very painful when a person runs themselves against its corners, and it can cause serious injuries. As an alternative, go for round and oval shaped tables and cushion them on the top if possible to make them blunt, and blunt edged cupboards. This minimizes the chances of injuries to your kids, especially when they get rough. Keep off cupboards because they can easily fall on your kids, but if you have to buy them, make sure they are very heavy and installed in rooms where kids do not frequent.
The type of flooring you install is also crucial. The right kind of floor to have when you have kids around is one which is not slippery, hard to clean, or cold. Hardwood floors are not difficult to clean, but one can easily slide on them when they have their socks on. Concrete floors are also easy to clean, but can get very cold and freeze your little ones’ feet. Choose carpet tiles since they are easy to clean, slip resistant, and warm on the feet.
Your walls are also another source of stress with young kids around, especially those at the crayons stage. But, you can coat your walls with an easy to clean type of paint in areas where the kids frequent a lot or install chalkboards on the walls to make both you and your kids happy. Again, it doesn’t matter how many times you tell your kids not to do stuff, they will always find a way to annoy you. Be smart!
